Sure, we've all heard the importance of having a mentor. But how do we find one? Do we ask them? What do you do when you have a mentor?
A mentor relationship is extremely important in the growth of our lives - from personal decisions, to career navigation. A mentor is someone who can help you to stay on course and someone who will remind you what is most important when you get off track.
There are many different ways you can select a mentor. Each person has to find the most organic pathway for him/her. With that in mind, one way is to take notice of those who you admire... perhaps there is someone who inspires you... who you hope to one day be like - whether it's personally or professionally. Spend a few conversations with that person to see if you feel you have good chemistry. If so, let them know how much their leadership/style inspires you, and that you would love to continue meeting with them on a regular basis. Ask them if they would consider being a mentor for you.
Most people will be flattered by this and will take this request very seriously - you have now asked someone to help you to grow as a person - which is a powerful request. It is now up to you to set up your ongoing meetings, bring your questions, ideas and topics, and make sure to continue to thank your mentor for their time, energy and for being who they are... There are no rules for how often you meet or what you talk about - but make sure it is often enough that the conversations feel connected, but not so often that it becomes a challenge to meet for the mentor. Each relationship will unique in terms of how often, when, how and where you meet.
A mentor is a crucial component to finding success in the areas of your life that don't always come easy - every person should have at least one mentor they look to for guidance and support.
And remember to also pay it forward one day - and be a mentor for someone else as well.
